Class 3

Welcome to Class 3 - Year 1

The  Class Teacher is Miss Waterfield and Mrs Sanders is the Class Teaching Assistant.

In addition to reading at home including reading online books and sharing library books, Year 1 children are asked to complete some maths or English homework.  This is set on alternate weeks on a Friday and should be returned on the following Wednesday.

Reading is at the heart of everything we do at Ilchester Community Primary school and it is vital that children have as many opportunities as possible to read and be read to across the week.

The children from Reception to Year 2 will be bringing home 2 different types of book to share and enjoy with you.

One is a fully decodable book, meaning they can read it accurately and fluently with little help from adults at home. This book will be allocated once your child has mastered the skill of blending. This book is carefully matched to your child’s reading ability and this is assessed regularly by the class teacher. We will be setting these online and the details of your child’s login and passwords is in their yellow reading record book. Your child will be reading this book in school during their reading practice sessions at school too. We would like you to read this at least 3 times across the week with your child and more if you’re able. Please enter a record of this in the reading log each time you read the book. Feel free to comment on their use of phonics, fluency/expression and understanding. The most important thing is that it is an enjoyable experience for everyone.

The second book is known as a ‘sharing book’ and will be a book that your child had chosen themselves. This book is all about promoting ‘reading for pleasure. To help foster this love of reading, your children will be visiting the library once a week to choose a book to share at home. Please remember that you shouldn’t expect your child to read this alone. Read it to or with them and if they want to they can read to you too. Discuss the pictures, enjoy the story, predict what might happen next, use different voices for the characters, explore the facts in a non-fiction book. The main thing is that you have fun! These books will be sent home weekly and just like the decodable book, we would like you to record when you have read it and your child’s response to the story.

We would expect you to be writing in the reading record 5 times per week. The reading logs will be checked on Mondays and Fridays to ensure children are enjoying books regularly. Your child will need their book bags and reading records on Mondays, Fridays and their class library day which is detailed on the class page.

Our PE days are Tuesdays and Thursdays. Please ensure your child has their PE kits in school for these days.
