Purpose of Study

Design and technology is an inspiring, rigorous and practical subject. Using creativity and imagination, pupils design and make products that solve real and relevant problems within a variety of contexts, considering their own and others’ needs, wants and values. They acquire a broad range of subject knowledge and draw on disciplines such as mathematics, science, engineering, computing and art. Pupils learn how to take risks, becoming resourceful, innovative, enterprising and capable citizens. Through the evaluation of past and present design and technology, they develop a critical understanding of its impact on daily life and the wider world. High-quality design and technology education makes an essential contribution to the creativity, culture, wealth and well-being of the nation.

Intent

Our intent is that our teaching of D&T will help pupils gain a coherent knowledge and understanding of how the process of design and technology can build respect, appreciation and pride in the everyday objects around themWe aim for it to inspire pupils’ curiosity about how things have been designed, developed and are madeChildren will be encouraged to ask perceptive questions, think critically, investigate, solve problems and develop their skills to help them understand the processes which happen when products are developed and made. 

 

Implementation

We are dedicated to delivering a high-quality D&T curriculum and this will be implemented through: 

  • Celebrating the cultural capital intent above and pupils are taught D&T in a coherent and structured approach, enabling progression of learning and skills that can be applied to other subjects. 

  • A curriculum that is designed with the intention that every pupil can reach their potential through a well thought out curriculum which allow for progression in all areas of D&T. 

  • Community links, activities and visits involving visitors are planned to allow our pupils to be proud and have a sense of belonging of their local area. 

  • Inspiring pupils to gain knowledge and skills from exploring and experimenting with different processes and technologies which encourage them to have a growing awareness of their local and national heritage. 

  • Promoting D&T when celebrating or learning about anniversaries, festivals and events throughout the year, which are linked to other areas of the curriculum. 

  • Pupils learning lessons from D&T which will influence the decisions they make in their lives in the future, supporting school’s overall focus on enabling them to become responsible citizens. 

  • High quality D&T lessons will inspire pupils to want to know more about technology and to think and act as designers and makers, understanding their role in the world around them. 

  • Equipping pupils with the knowledge and skills to ensure they are aware and understand health and safety issues relating to the tasks they undertake. 

 

Impact

The children have clear enjoyment of Design and Technology and can apply the skills they have learnt to other areas of the curriculum. 

At the end of the two year cycle, pupils will have experience of; 

  • How to follow the design, make, evaluate process to create a product. 

  • Solve real life problems using practical skills. 

  • Choosing from and using a growing range of tools and materials. 

  • Using and understanding technical vocabulary associated with DT 

  • Preparing a range of healthy, varied and nutritious dishes and learning about food safety and hygiene.
